What is Bronchitis?

A nagging cough with mucus (phlegm) and breathing difficulty are indicative of bronchitis. The problem begins when the airways in the lungs, known as bronchial tubes are infected or irritated and swollen. This makes it difficult for air to flow in and out of the tubes, therefore causing difficulty in breathing. Bronchitis is nothing to worry about and is completely treatable after the right diagnosis. Some of the common causes of bronchitis are bacteria, virus, irritants, smoke, and chemicals.

The right diagnosis and treatment can cure bronchitis

Broadly, there are two types of bronchitis –

Acute bronchitis – This is more common, caused by infections – viral or bacterial. Some of the symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat and wheezing, amongst others. It usually lasts for a few weeks, but usually does not cause any problem afterwards.

Chronic bronchitis – This is a little more serious than acute bronchitis. This type of bronchitis is usually recurring or stays for a long time. It is suggestive of other lung problems, such as COPD. The main symptoms are cough and breathing problems that have lasted for months or years. Smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. The important thing to remember is that bronchitis is curable, with the right diagnosis and treatment.

When do you meet a doctor?

Whether it’s acute or chronic, bronchitis needs medical attention so that you can get proper treatment. If you find that your cough has the following traits, then it’s important to consult your doctor as soon as possible.

  • If you cough up blood or thick/dark mucus (phlegm).

  • If you have a foul taste in your mouth.

  • If it interrupts your sleep.

  • If it lasts more than 3 weeks.

  • If it causes chest pain.

  • If it makes it hard to speak.

  • If it is accompanied by other symptoms like wheezing and/or breathlessness.

  • If it is accompanied with an unexplained weight loss.
